Book review: Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt

Normally I don’t choose nonfiction; however, since we had a trip pending to Savannah, I wanted to learn a little more about the area before we went to Savannah.

The novel is written by John Berendt who went to Savannah to interview the wealthy antique dealer, Jim Williams. In the midst of the interview, the reader gets to meet several colorful characters, my favorite being The Lady Chablis. The Lady Chablis is a famous drag performer and personality.

The second portion of the book examines a murder that one of the characters is being accused and details the trial. It is a little slow, but it is interesting.

I was looking forward to our visit to Savannah this summer to see all of the places I have pictured in my mind from reading this detailed novel!

We went at the end of June, and it was so exciting to walk through Forsyth Park and to the Mason Williams house, just like in the book!
