Amy Whey is a suburban mother of 2 kids: a 15 year old stepdaughter and a newborn baby boy. Amy loves her family and her life with her children. She has a close relationship with her best friend, Charlotte. The friends belong to a book club that meets on a regular basis. One evening, a mysterious woman shows up at their book club. Angelica Roux is a beautiful and charming woman who charms the book club into drinking heavily and telling intimate secrets.
Eventually Roux approaches Amy with information that she knows Amy’s deepest and darkest secret. Roux wants a large payment in exchange to keep this information secret. A game between Amy and Roux emerges of deception and suspense.
This book got a lot of buzz. It took me a little while to get into it. The outcome was pretty predictable despite the red herrings throughout the novel. Once I got through the slower part at the beginning which was needed to lay out the background information of Amy’s past, it became pretty suspenseful and intriguing. I enjoyed Jackson’s writing style, and I would read more of her books in the future.
I gave this book 3/5 stars on Goodreads.
